    Read a run-of-the-mill story here: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27219980/detail.html .

But it's this paragraph that caught my eye:
Does anybody know what this program might be?

I use a program, for free, called Prey. http://preyproject.com/. It basically sits in the background on your computer and checks in with a server you can access remotely every 20 mins or so. If when it checks in it has been marked as stolen it sends a bunch of information about the current activities/IP configuration to the server including a webcam photo is if you choose.

I believe one company that does have that is Absolute Software, LoJack for laptops found here: http://www.absolute.com/en/lojackforlaptops/technology.aspx

My previous company was using that quite a bit and from what I recall, found quite a few misplaced laptops that people had left in taxis, airports, etc. While it doesn't say it on that page, one of the options once the laptop is marked stolen is to use the webcam to take pictures of whoever is using the machine. Quite slick...
