I tell you... I just cant believe how lousy this website it... constant timeouts and server hiccups.... why cant they develop something like what American has...? I never have issues with the aa.com website, but with LAN it drives me nuts.

I issued a ticket yesterday after about 4 tries and the dumb wrong side of the Andes system made 4 different reservations..... they then cancelled themselves out, had to call the 0800 number.... wait for 15 minutes..... now I cant even select my darned seats for the long haul portion out of LIM......

Pathetic... the web site is just pathetic.

I agree about the website, but there are a lot of programmers from your side of the Andes in the English classes I teach at the LAN offices...

I agree there is programming talent here.... the tech companies will tell you this... but the issues with LAN's crappy site is more a high level management issue. They just need to invest some serious $$$ in getting a new website, something like what American Airlines has... the current website is simply pathetic.... slow, time outs all the time... it will make you do things 3 or 4 times before things get done.... shameful.

Totalmente de acuerdo. And that IS typically Chilean. Nothing gets done without at least a few reclamos. I always think it's amazing that they have such a good product in the air when compared to the ground service.

Doesnt it cost LAN more $$$ to have to staff their 0800 numbers with more employees because things cant get done online properly...??? Where are the beancounters..??? Or is labour suddenly very cheap over on the wrong side of the Andes..????

One must agree, but I really don't think it has anything specifically to do with LAN or Chile. The same is true for many carriers, including famously competent ones (I am not fond of SQ website for example). I book LAN through AA because it works. I book TAM through other *A sites for the same reason. LATAM really worries me about ground handling and web services. Both of them are pretty good in the air and TAM F is superb (for example I love that they pick up my bags on arrival and escort me to them), but checkin os horrendous. LAN is not better, but is slightly different.

You would think we could have one decent balanced airline in Mercosur, wouldn't you?

Labor in Chile is very cheap. Now that I live here and earn locally, I can tell you that salaries do not match the cost of living for the vast majority of workers.

I hear equal horror stories about both on the ground (here and on FT), though I have no personal experience with TAM. Some of my friends rave about TAM's service in the air, and of course LAN doesn't have an F cabin. My worry is that ground service will actually get worse...hard to imagine, but a very real possibility.

Over here in the northern climes we have such horrible airports that such things as baggage unloading are serious issues, not to mention horrible checkin experiences and lousy airport services. SCL and EZE are not great but either is vastly better than GRU, don't you think? ...and nothing is cheap in Brazil, other than my opinions.

Since you're asking...yes. :( And such a massively-transited airport for many people who see nothing of the country but the terminal, it's a shame.

Labor costs are relative... but perhaps Im wrong. Thought that labor in Chile was close to what it costs in Brazil... or...?

No idea about wages in Brazil, but I go on vacation there cause my pesos go a lot further in Rio than in Santiago.

That is news to me too. I marvel at SCL being more expensive than GIG, but not in a good way.

It may depend on the places in town you live and shop.... but Im willing to bet that on average, Rio is more expensive than SCL....

All the global comparisons indicate that. The global comparisons are usually based on business travel, though, and Rio suffers from a massive deficit of hotel rooms, among other things.

The July 2011 index shows Argentina more expensive based on PPP, with Brazil and Chile also quite high
    http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/07/big-mac-index

One major caveat is the the Big Mac index is based on domestic reference, not international travelers so the distortions of over/underweighted FX rates are accentuated.

Are we OT? Of course but it is just we three, so who cares?

I am funding my wine buys and Kiva loans from currency speculation, among other things.

Both for currency. neither for wine, although I have bought Bordeaux before bottling in the past. I know about FX, I don't know much about wine. I don't play with fires i don't understand, and still I sometimes get burned.
