    There may never be a bird in the sky with a LATAM paint job. I hope there isn't.

    Not at all. I think that the airline (as an operating airline) is going to be called LAN. The holding company is LATAM. I may be wrong ;)

    Ah..... well, LAN is in my view the better name when compared to TAM..... so, FWIW, good move LATAM on the name selection !!!

    There is no intention to merge the airlines. there is in fact no legal basis at present that would allow that to happen. The LATAM entity will not be an operating entity, but is to continue to be only a holding company. If current discussions are accurate they will have substantial fleet harmonisation and support services also. Possibly the largest visible changes anticipated soon are
    (1) the announcement of the chosen alliance. It it is not OneWorld there will be many surprised people and;
    (2) the formal announcement of the new freight hub to be built in Brazil. The location is pretty closely guarded now
    but there is speculation about both BSB and CNF, I'll bet the latter is more likely but I haven't a clue in fact. LAN Cargo is based in MIA and only 7% of their business has anything to do with Chile.
    The company announcement is here, including the flat statement that the operating certificates will not be merged.

    LAN has 32 B787 on order as well as still another few B767 (they made the very last 767 order) that will all be converted to cargo use as the 787's arrive. TAM will have 27 A350-900 that will replace their B777 and B767, Nobody has said, but probably the remaining TAM B777 and B767 may end out converted to freighters also.

    Since they've already announced that the fleet orders will not change it looks like the TAM longhaul fleet will be A350-900 and the LAN one will be B787. That makes sense because the larger A350 will be better suited to the more dense Brazilian routes and the B787 is ideal for the longer, thinner LAN routes. It is interesting that they were coordinating their A320 order long before the LATAM announcements, with between them 42 A320neo and 60 A320 current generation on order.

    In the end this is not a merger but the acquisition of TAM by LAN. When Rolim Adolfo Amaro died in a helicopter crash in 2001 there was rally no succession prepared and the airline has not really done anything other than continue the course he had set. Enrique Cueto of LAN and Rolim Amaro were great friends, both had begun with freight operations and Amaro taught Cueto to fly. There never was any real doubt that eventually the Cueto family and Amaro family would join forces and that Enrique would end out in charge.

    There is some quite entertaining history concerning the early days of both families, including Rolim flying around in a single engine Cessna carrying freight. In fact TAM obtained the distributorship for Cessna and has through TAM Aviaçâo Executiva the largest distributor of Cessna aircraft, with a fleet of more than 200 Cessna Citation jets.

    TAM also maintains an aviation museum, started by the Amaro family

    The TAM red carpet originated when Rolim wanted to add a little class to his fledgling airline.

    I could go on for some time...
