Kyoto is the formal Imperial capital of Japan. It is the center of Japan and also home of Nintendo :p Ancient cultural like tea ceremony, flower arrangement, kimonos, and geisha. Lets create a visual travelogue of this beautiful city!

Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. The garden complex is an excellent example of Muromachi period garden design. Top two levels of the temple is covered with pure gold leaf.

JR Kyoto Station at Christmas. Scan of a photo I took back in 1999, so a bit grainy.

If you go to Fushimi Inari, be sure to track down some of these. The original fortune cookies -- copied by a Japanese confectioner in SFO, who was then copied by a large number of Chinese-American restaurants, until the copy became far more famous than the original. (NY Times article here.)

The originals are very crispy, have rattling soybeans inside and a bit of a miso flavor. The "fortune" is held in place by the fold of the cookie rather than baked inside the cookie.

This is a portion of the red-brick aquaduct at Tennin-ji --- the same location as the roof detail shown in post #7 above

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. I was lucky enough to see two ladies dressed as geisha when I visited :) (their faces were all powdered up and are white!)

Here is another example of attention to detail and to beauty. This is a plaque in the pavement in the middle of the street indicating the names of the streets that are intersecting. This was seen in the Gion area where Goryomae-dori and Manju-koji intersect.

CRW_7493_arashiyama_frogs (Large).jpg Arashiyama area - will need to look up the name of the Temple where this was seen. Notice the reflections of the trees and roofline of the buildings in the water.
Edit:2011-Feb-19: This was seen on the grounds of Tenryuji Temple in Arashiyama.

Notice the reflection of the buildings across the street from Indodas Coffee store (either on Sannenzaka or Ninenzaka - I don't remember the name for this particular location I guess I will need to "google" it )

Touji is a nice, quiet temple. Less crowded, and nice grounds. Still, the place in Kyoto that I like the best is Sanjyusangendo. It's too bad they don't let you take photos inside...

Thanks thetenken for sharing your thoughts. It is good to know that you find this as the best place in Kyoto ... we didn't visit because the typical description is something like "Sanjusangendo is Japan's longest wooden building which is filled with 1,001 statues of Kannon" which didn't seem very interesting .... we take the time next time to explore this area also ... its over near the Hyatt right?
Once again, thanks for sharing your experiences.

Here is a photo taken on a side-street in the Gion area of three women who might or might not be maiko/geiko - could be tourists who paid to dress up and walk around

Here is a store front/house window in the Gion area - believe it was on Yamato-oji dori street - of someone who works with wood.
