Kiva is absolutely thrilled with the kind support of the milepoint Lending Team and has featured us in their latest blog post. Extra, extra, read all about it here.

"One of Kiva’s newest lending teams, mile point, has caught our attention recently. As one Kiva lender stated, mile point had a “stellar September” and should definitely be recognized for the team’s rapid growth in recent weeks! The team consists of frequent flyers and collectors of frequent flyer miles who came together earlier this year and have since made over 7,000 loans with $378,200 lent to borrowers across the globe. To learn more about this team, we spoke with Randy Petersen, one of the milepoint Team Captains, who talks about the team’s energy and enthusiasm shown in their extremely creative group and individual lending pledges. For instance, one member has pledged to make a Kiva loan for every person that follows him on Twitter and re-tweets one of his posts! Read more to learn about this team of flyers who are devoted to giving back to others.

Would you mind giving us a little background on the milepoint lending team? How did this team of frequent flyers come together?
Randy : Milepoint was launched on March 1st, 2011 as a place where everything you ever wanted to know about frequent flyer miles and points was there. It started with just two goals: 1) To be a friendly place for frequent flyers and, 2) to share and give back to others. From day one, milepoint adopted three charities of choice for a program we call "FlyForward": Kiva, LIVESTRONG and Susan G. Komen For The Cure. The team was formed from frequent flyers from around the world (one of the team captains is from Scandinavia) and 100% of the success can be attributed to having some very active and generous members in the team which have passed along their enthusiasm."

**** Also, news about our team was picked up by the Humanitarian News.

We need the milepoint logo too!:D

OK, I'll wear one of those, once I can get it made, if the team can pass $1,000,000 in loans before 31st December 2011. I will wear it to our milepoint Kiva DO in San Francisco one time only. I will wear it happily and proudly.

So, how to make $1,000,000 in loans before year end?

I think it is a great goal, I just don't see the numbers adding up by end of the year.

Before the DO though, that I actually think is possible. Of course I'd then say we need to make it by March 1 for the 1 year anniversary of MP. And if we make it by then, why not by the Feb anniversary of the creation of the MP Kiva team.. etc.

Maybe we should start a round of pledges for those who want to see jbcarioca in a pink pj at the Kiva DO.... :p
You probably won't raise as much as an eyebrow in SFO anyway :D

    I know I'd make a pledge!

See update in OP that the story was picked up by the Humanitarian News.

When I saw that, I was stunned for a second as this team has been so much an enjoyment that I truly forgot that these are humanitarian efforts the team is involved in. The weight of the word, humanitarian, It really humbles me to think about that. It's been so enjoyable and among friends so rewarding ... Yes, this talking head is a little stunned.

Congratulations again, Randy. No other organization like milepoint IIRC has ever had such positive press. It does prove that milepoint is not just about wanting our points and benefits, which we all do, but is also about sharing our good fortune with others less fortunate. You have created a very positive force for good as well as a force for better FF benefits. We all like that combination.:D

I actually made a pledge (in the other thread) for $1000 if we reach $1m by 31 December 2011. At the time I thought it was a big stretch...

In 2005, I was a speaker at a non profit conference on building community outreach. I used FT as an example of a helping outreach community. The same can be said of the Milepoint community !

One of my concluding remarks was the following:

"If people who are linked only by a common passion for travel, be it for business or simply pleasure, can reach out with a helping hand, there is indeed hope for the world community to come together in a common human experience of helping each other because that is the right thing to do "

I had no idea at that time that the Kiva Milepoint community was that group linked by a common passion for travel and reaching out with a helping hand to make a difference in our world. You talk about words coming back not to haunt you but to further motivate you to effect by a small loan a change in the world.

Kiva summons us to be signs of hope in a broken world. :)
