so after a mild heart attack - http://milepoint.com/forums/threads/flight-to-lih-canceled-vacation-lost.19431 we are still on track to visit the garden isle in a couple of days

reason for this thread is that we dont have driving licenses (yes, no licenses, don't ask) so we won't be able to rent a car :( i was thinking scooters, but turns out they also require a license for that in Kauai .. and biking wasn't recommended by our concierge at Sheraton Poipu

we could ride around in cabs but that might brake the bank .. any frugal ideas/suggestions how can we get to places (hiking trails, beaches ...)? as mentioned above we'll be based on south shore at Poipu

Just looking at Google Maps, I don't see how you'd get to Lihue on a bike. I've never been to Kaui, but assuming you stay off the highway, you should be okay. Most of the roads near the coast in Hawaii are pretty flat.

You can look at Kaui's bus service and see if comes close to where you are staying:
    http://www.kauai.gov/Government/Departments/TransportationAgency/BusSchedules/tabid/208/Default.aspx
You could also sign up for a guided tour. I'm sure your concierge could tell you about those.
Your best bet may be to make friends while there. You may meet someone who will take you around a bit.
Personally I can't imagine being on Kauai without a car because there are so many beautiful places to see all over the island. But Poipu is a nice place to be stranded!

thanks, looking into all options - printed out bus schedules and will be super-friendly (note to self: don't over-do and creep the bejeezus out of people)

    Excellent!
    Good luck.
Even if you are mostly stuck on the beach at Poipus, it will be beautiful.
