what a complete hoax the wine section is at the larger shop just past security

I was hoping to get a few bottles of California, Oregon or Washington wine, prices are like from 175% to 300% of normal retail prices

what is the point of calling yourself duty free?

Same as duty free everywhere else in the world: Dupe unsuspecting pax into buying overpriced goods under the guise of getting a deal. But they don't charge taxes so it is "duty free."

Wine is probably the worst of all because there are so many brands it is hard for the average consumer to know if they are overpaying or not.

Seth is right. NYC airports duty free is a joke; unlike Asia and Europe, where you can save some money.

My experience, particularly with booze, in Asia and Europe is similar. No savings over retail prices in the US. Savings can be significant over retail in those countries, especially in Scandinavia where taxes on booze are very high. But usually it doesn't offer much to the U.S. consumer other than the ability to buy a whole bottle inside security.
