JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) said a New York to Las Vegas flight was diverted to a Texas airport today after the captain became ill.
Flight 191 landed safely in Amarillo as an off-duty captain helped in the cockpit, Allison Steinberg, a JetBlue spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. The captain was taken to a hosptial for treatment of the undisclosed medical condition. The plane carried 135 passengers and five on-duty crewmembers, she said.

I'm sure the FO would have been able to land just fine, but yeah it never hurts. The fact the NYPD guy was onboard and was able to subdue him (I read he did some crazy choke hold on the Captain) was a good thing as well. I'm sure civilians onboard would have eventually reacted, but it never hurts to have a big guy around that's used to man-handling people for a living. :)

From the story I read it sounded like the off duty pilot took over once the plane was on the ground? If so that means that the flight crew as scheduled took care of landing etc...

Good thing the pilot was not carrying a gun (as some of them could).

The wife of the JetBlue pilot who had a midair meltdown that triggered an emergency landing said on Sunday his family is focused on his recovery and thanked those on the flight for their professionalism after being put in "an awful situation."
