Effective immediately, United CEO Jeff Smisek's title as dear respected Supreme Leader (d.r.S.L.) has been restored in full. He has delivered Continental's award-winning reputation to the new United Airlines, as evidenced by the proclamation of United as "Airline of the Year" by Global Traveler magazine.

    http://www.prnewswire.com/news-rele...of-the-year-by-global-traveler-300002857.html

I must repent for my previous doubts about the greatness of the d.r.S.L., and pray that I shall once more benefit from his mercy in my travels.

Two important questions to ask about any company winning any award:
    1. Who voted?
    2. How much did said company pay to play?
Take such things with a grain of salt.

I'd put more faith in the validity and fairness of the election system in Cuba and North Korea than these award selections.

it is tough to lose when playing against oneself. It's a royal flush. United won in every real or imagined category. All they needed to do to win was to appear on the ballot :D

What I love about hospitals is that when they don't get recognized by US News and World Reports as being one of the top institutions in the country, they go out and find some other bogus rating organization to list them as "One of the best hospitals in the treatment of .......".
And then they advertise this bogus rating extensively even though it means absolutely nothing.

Does the UA rating described in the original post start to have the same "smell" as the above hospital paragraph?
    I wonder why

"A panel of Global Traveler Advisory Board members and employees chose United based on outside research, experiences traveling with the airline and information provided by the individual airlines that were nominated."

Sure, it's a miserable methodology, but who have you seen do better? I am reminded of Inside Flyer's requests here on MP to "rate program X". The reports I've seen from them always seem a bit rosier than what I would expect based on our ratings... I'm imagining that most Global Traveler (and Inside Flyer) staffers are not, in fact, super-frequent (global) travelers. And even if you get a handful of real ones on the "advisory board", can a handful really do justice to comparing the multitudes of products out there?

Here's a link to the magazine's "Globility Board".

Of its twenty members, it has people who have "achieved silver or higher status with Delta Air Lines ... every year since 1997", "achieved United’s 1K status and the top levels with Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott and Starwood", "flies more than 100,000 miles every year and is a million-mile flyer with United", and "has traveled for business over the past eight years" (all quotes re: different members).

I'm not seeing much here that would differentiate these folks from the denizens of MP other, perhaps, than that most of the twenty members DON'T establish their bonafides as "frequent" travelers.

And I'm not seeing anything re: "has made a point of flying N out M domestic airlines" or "has sampled K different airlines' international F products". Indeed, I'm seeing three who specifically mention serious UA loyalty (the MM and 1K quoted above, plus one more MM). Polling those who have drunk the Kool-Aid seems like it will give a biased result.

Were this another thread I would suggest that "teh d.r.S.L." had been effected by the impact of talking softly but carrying a big stick, but since it is not, I won't. :D

Since UA has been doing an excellent job of copying DL in just about everything (except for having much higher fares than DL), I decided to try DL on my current trip. And ya know what? I like it (DL). UA, you really want to drive me away? Just keep doing what you're doing.

My guess is that d.r.S.l. Listened to "our dear leader" in dc and decided to do has he does. What ever he wants to do and no matter what happens declare victory.
