I was really psyched when I heard back in October about Japan possibly giving out 10,000 free flights to help with the economy and tourism industry... I read earlier that the Japan Tourism Agency announced that this program was not approved as part of the government draft budget for 2012.

I made a post about this which you can read at

I wonder how many members of MP planned to apply for this program???

After visiting Japan in October, I don't think it will be on my travel plans for a long while.

Holy crap was it like a kick in the pants going there... especially after Southeast Asia

Was it the Yen rate that felt like a kick?

But if given a free flight I am sure you would consider a return trip!

Where did you go in SE Asia? I've gone twice- probably my favorite region in the world.

That's a shame they did not approve it. I would have certainly applied for the program. I still have plans to visit Japan sometime in the fall of this year.

Ditto. I would still like to visit but probably won't be able to for another year or two.

    Oh yes, the YEN!

Well yeah :) But only for positioning reasons so I can continue on somewhere I haven't been yet (that's hopefully more affordable) With Tokyo, I had minimal cost for flights... cashed in 10k UA miles and 25k BA miles to get me home from Singapore to NYC.... I had done 25k BA miles on the way to Singapore but wanted to see other places than Hong Kong hence why I used the UA miles. The place I stayed at was free thanks to CouchSurfing and it was an amazing expat flat in a ritzy part of town, with very good company... but still... I exchanged 100 Euro on arrival in NRT and it only lasted me for a round trip NEX train promo + a dinner with my host for his birthday party... (very minimal food, but unlimited beer between 8pm and 10pm... so we drank like fish)

I love the region and will definitely return. Spent 7 months in Singapore but got to see much of the nearby countries and am definitely considering moving to Malaysia for good (or for at least a longer while) after I finish with New Zealand.

That is awesome! I've been to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Each trip was a little over 2 weeks so there is still so much to see.

Did you go to Laos & Burma? Those are the top places that I want to visit in SE Asia.
