Back in March, Boeing has flown Airplane #23, Japan Airlines' (JAL) first 787 (JA822J), from Everette to San Antonio to activate the San Antonia 787 production line. After 8 months of modifications, JA822J has finally returned back to Everette on Nov 13 to undergo the final stage of production.

When I toured the Everett factory last year, there were a whole bunch of seemingly complete 787s parked outside. I am kind of surprised that they have so far only delivered 2 (?) aircraft.

But what about those aircraft in JAL, ANA and other liveries that seemed ready enough to be parked outside last year? DId they have to go back into the shop for significant rework based on the test flights? Or were those the written off as unsellable early production aircraft?

Wow, that sounds like significant rework.

Probably also explains why Boeing decided not to sell the first six (?) aircraft, as it would presumably be too costly to bring them up to standard.

They were all ready to go, but JALPak blogged about the seats and interior wall colors, so they went into a panic and had to redesign everything, order new seats, choose a new color scheme... that takes time to fix.

sounds like the engine certification process has slipped to early 2012 due to lack of production aircrafts :( It's 95% complete right now

What does that mean? They have been producing aircraft for three or so years.

Yes, yes, my comment was more general about the pace of delivery (or not).
