Getting ready to move ahead with a trip we have wanted to take for a long time. I can be away no more than three weeks, including travel. A good friend has suggested that if we are limiting our time in NZ to a week or so, we should just do the South Island.

Here's what we are looking at right now.

    Fly NY-HKG-AKL - 2 nights AK:

Fly AKL-CHC - 6 night tour south island

    Fly CHC-MEL - 3 nights Melbourne

    Fly CHC-CNS - 4 nights Cairnes

    Fly CNS-SYD - 5 nights Sydney

Flights across the ocean and within Australia all seem to be available on miles. Plan to stay at Hyatts in Melbourne and Sydney and still have to figure out what to do in Cairns. Biggest issue seems to be NZ - Pretty sure that without any real chain hotels and with no desire to drive on the other side of the road, we'll take a tour. Any ideas of good companies to deal with? Doesn't have to be private as long as the group is not too big. Hotels have to be decent!

Appreciate any insights at all. Many, many thanks!

Haven't been to the Sth Island but I heard many good things about the Hilton in Queenstown.
For Cairns, it really depends on what you want to see. The Clintons stayed at Port Douglas, not Cairns city itself. If you're not really into beaches or scuba diving, there's not much else to see.
