Was looking at joining my sister up to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program but then I encountered this:

You can become a Qantas Frequent Flyer and receive your Frequent Flyer number instantly. Start earning Frequent Flyer award points by completing the online application form.
Australian and New Zealand residents need to pay a once only joining fee of:
    Australian residents - A$82.50*
    New Zealand residents - NZ$50

WHAT?!!!! Is this correct? You now have to pay merely to be a QFF point earner?!
Is there any way around this?

You’ve had to pay for quite a while, but there are ways to get around it. Many of the companies that offer big bonuses to QFF, such as OnePath insurance or Woolworths Everyday Rewards (you’ll see step 3 is become a QFF member), will give you a free membership if you join up through them. Alternatively, if you’re based overseas anyway, it’s free to join, but overseas members wont have a card mailed out to them until they hit some sort of status. Local members receive a Bronze card, which is essentially useless, as it’s not NGCI-capable just yet.

I'd be fascinated to see how much revenue QF generates from enlistment fees.

Considering the normal fee, if it was just $10 they’d still have made quite a bit from the initial Everyday Rewards partnership!
