Provided that there is availability, I see no problem other than the fact that to do this in January to Feb 2013 would also involve time travel, which is something that united.com has not yet been programmed to book or offer...

I don't think this is valid. It looks like it needs to be three separate one-way tickets otherwise it looks like RTW booking. Haven't heard of Europe via Asia before. Yes on the other direction but would need to find a really "flexible" US Air agent for that from SFO.

Validity depends on the program you are redeeming from. If from UA then it is valid as US-S. Asia with a stopover in Europe on the way back and an open jaw at the stopover. If the website won't book it just call in.

So phone it in and get it done. Not very difficult in most cases.

    I had this one originally:

    Sfo to crk
    Mnl to cdg
    Cdg to sfo

And paid $297 in taxes and 65kmiles per person for 3 people. I asked them to change it to

    Sfo to mnl
    Mnl to cdg
    Lhr to sfo

The first agent messed it up and removed the mnl to cdg leg. I called back to have it fixed and now the receipt is 62.5K miles per person but the taxes were almost double. Does that sound right?

You are being charged the London Departure tax or ADP (Air Passenger Duty). It is more expensive to leave from LHR.

Seth, on the phone with UA. I have a JFK-TPE-SIN (destination) SIN-HKG (Stopover) HKG-IST-JFK. They are pushing back saying it is a RTW and won't price at the 65K price. Waiting for their rate desk to price it for her. HUCA if it doesn't go through?

It isn't a RTW and there is no rule about crossing both oceans on a *A award. I'd HUCA rather than fight with them, but that's the rule.

After a bit of pleading she it it to price in three different reservations for me and waived the phone fees. Thanks! Looking forward to the TK flight back.

Did they issue it at the 65k rate or something else? It should be only 65k.

What makes or prevents something from being a RTW?

Number of stops, duration of trip and oceans crossed. A RTW award issued by UA has 3-6 stops of >24 hours each and crosses both oceans. I also believe it has a 10 day minimum duration though that might not be accurate.

A round-trip award has only two stops - the destination and a stopover - and can cross either both oceans or one ocean both times.
