Hello, I live in the UK and am flying with a friend in BA Club World (I am a BA Exec Club member) to Boston this weekend. On Monday we are flying from Boston to Chicago in economy on an American Airlines morning flight. I was just wondering, how easy it is to upgrade last minute or even at the airport in Boston? (First world problems...;)). Have the same query flying back to Boston from Chicago with United on the following weekend...

Any advice very much appreciated - thank you :)

Hope for TOD offers when checking in.

Somewhat derisive term referring to the airlines' practice of selling
premium seats to infrequent flyers for very low rates, i.e., "Tens of
Dollars," rather than honoring supposedly confirmable-in-advance
upgrade instruments held by elites - or offering the elites the chance
to get in on the same offers.

Realistically, I would not expect to upgrade in your situation. If you want first, buy first.

BOS is a pretty heavily traveled route to/from ORD. If I were in your position, I would hope to buy up to MCE on AA outbound, but UA is reputed to be selling TODs out from under elites all the time.

While I switched less than a year ago from UA to AA, I can't confirm that popular theory. I always used miles, instruments or $$$ to insure that I rode up front on UA. A two hour flight wouldn't be the end of the world for "normal" people. For me, I have some stinking neurological condition that no doctor seems to be able to identify, and economy is an option that I can't afford physically, as much as it tempts me financially.

Edit: Both airlines have hubs at ORD and significant operations at BOS, so the elites are going to be a large percentage of the folks with whom you are competing. Whether or not either airline wishes to sell TODs, those using $$$, miles or instruments can easily fill the front cabin.

Thank you everyone very much for the advice :) :) I'll see what happens at the airports - not the end of the world, just nice treat if possible.
    Thanks again :)

AA sometimes offers upgrades at the check-in kiosk, though not often. And, as others have said, that's a route heavy with elite travels. You might have more luck on a weekend, but lots of flights are more full nowadays.
