That's too bad because I was recently astounded by one Kempinski hotel and was planning on exploring the chain a lot more. I just stayed at Kempinski Fleuve Congo Hotel in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, for 8 wonderful nights during which I experienced service and hospitality in a "third world" country that were second to none that I have experienced in any so-called "first world" countries. Below are pictures of the Kempinski Fleuve Congo Hotel lobby...

...and of a view of the sunset over the Congo River, for which the hotel is named, as seen from my hotel room window [Brazzaville, the capital of the other Congo, can be seen across the river making the two capital cities the nearest to each other in the world):

Adding 3 nights that I spent at PARKROYAL Hotel in Myanmar late last year to the 8 nights that I just spent at the Kinshasa Kempinski, I earned enough points to qualify for the second-tier Gold elite status in the loyalty program of Kempinski, called DISCOVERY, in which PARKROYAL also participates. In fact, the Kempinski chain is part of a large conglomerate of hotels collectively known as Global Hotel Alliance (GHA), which "brings together reputable hotel brands from across the globe, including":
    • Alila Hotels & Resorts stylish, relaxing environments and superb hospitality in India and The Asia Pacific.
    • Anantara Hotels & Resorts with luxury accommodation in some of Asia’s most exotic destinations.
    • Art Series Hotels Group three art-inspired, award-winning properties in Melbourne.
    • Atura Hotels where modern travellers go to escape the tired and embrace a new experience.
    • AVANI Hotels & Resorts stylish and imaginative. Relaxed, yet sophisticated. Straightforward, yet luxurious.
    • Corinthia Hotels effortless luxury properties across Europe and beyond
    • The Doyle Collection unique selection of urban havens across Ireland, the UK and the USA.
    • First Hotels centrally located hotels throughout Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

    • PER AQUUM Hotels & Resorts pushing the boundaries in design and architecture, offering a unique guest experience.
    • QT Hotels & Resorts eclectic mix of design, art, style and luxury with a touch of quirk.
    • Rixos Hotels offering traditional Turkish hospitality and unique spa experiences.
    • Rydges Hotels unrivalled comfort and convenience in key cities in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
    • Shaza Hotels inspired by the cultures of the silk route, with a property in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
    • Tangram Hotels two stylish, fresh, yet focused on the basics hotels in Erbil, Iraq and Beijing, China.
    • Thon Hotels offering Norwegian hospitality across key cities in Belgium, Norway and Sweden
    • Tivoli Hotels & Resorts up-scale deluxe hotels in prime locations throughout Portugal and Brazil.
    • Ultratravel Collection exclusive association of independent ultra-luxury hotel brands and properties

A feature of the DISCOVERY program is that they have unique benefits for their top-tier elites called BLACK:
"...early check in from 9am*, late check out until 6pm*, guaranteed room availability up to 24 hours prior to arrival**, a double room upgrade* and your personal choice of local amenity!

The double room upgrade is definitely quite unique in the business...

.....only if the two category room upgrade is guaranteed. Lots of programs give upgrades based on availability at check in to the best room or even standard suite.

Is Kempinski's future so uncertain that they are having a "going out of business sale"? The following deals just landed in my inbox and considering the quality of their hotels, the discounts they are offering are simply amazing. Asia 50% off; Africa up to 30% off (the Kempinski Fleuve Hotel pictured above where I just stayed August 30-September 7 is discounted by 30%!). I would definitely take advantage of this if I were traveling to one of the featured cities and doing a revenue stay but I've already booked my stays for rest of the year, including for my annual year-end travels. Click on the image for the website that provides more info.
