Is it normal that your own new thread or posts don't appear in "what's new?

When I start a thread or add a post to an existing thread I don't see it when I hit "what's new". Is there some filter that doesn't recognize one's own post as "new"?

Your post is not, in fact, new -- you've already seen it. As soon as you read a thread, that thread drops out of What's New until someone else posts.

Your new thread will reappear once there's a new post (in addition to your original post).
