I'd say IAH-ORD during the week is just as bad.

LAX-IAD is *terrible.* The last time I flew it felt like half the plane was 1K.

I did EWR-SFO on a Tuesday morning on a 738. F cabin was full 2 weeks prior to departure and I was 24 on the UDU list as a Plat on a W fare. No one on the UDU list was cleared. They even downgraded someone from F to Y.

In September, a CO EWR-SFO that was booked months before on a W fare as well and I was about #24 on the upgrade list. I wanted to stay an extra day in NYC anyway, so I did a CFC to a flight the following day and snagged the last R seat with miles.

Lesson learned, I'm using RPU's from now on when I fly this route

Anything that's being labeled as a premium transcon i.e JFK-LAX/SFO or EWR-West Coast is definitely WORTH the RPU's....

I tried to use a CR1 the other day as a PPlat and still didn't clear.

I have such a hard time using CR1s with EWR-SFO when the same thing gets me so much more on JFK-SFO. :(

Like WA and unavaca, I checked since I booked and there were no NC available so not even a chance for CR1 use.

I tried a using a CR1 a few months ago - booked about a month in advance SFO-EWR. As a PPlat, it didn't clear in either direction.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the list of names eligible for UDU, but I think its ridiculous to put everyone on it, often when the numbers of passengers exceeds the number of seats in F.

I must be incredibly lucky. I don't think I've ever missed an upgrade on that route on a Monday or Friday.

For the past two months the front cabin has been either completely sold out or near sold out a week or so out. Maybe one upgrade. I bought an M fare three weeks ago and there was one PN seat open. I grabbed it.

Maybe I'm going against the rush or something. I am frequently on ORD-IAH on Monday evening and IAH-ORD on Friday morning and have been upgraded almost 100% of the time 5 days out.

Tried to clear a relative with my RDU this morning, reverse direction SFO-EWR, 752 w/BF config (16 seats). Two folks had been pre-cleared prior to 24-hour UDU mark, so they were either PPlat or GS EUA, or perhaps had redeemed an F award but were previously confirmed in Y.

At the 24-hour mark, F showed 16 of 16 booked.

At SFO, F showed 15 of 16 booked.

My relative was number 1 on the standby for a long time, dropped down to number 2 in the last 30 mins.

Ultimately, the last F seat was claimed, but no additional name moved to the "Cleared" list, so that person must have bought their way into the seat.

At takeoff, 25 total elites were on the standby upgrade list. No one cleared.

Tough, tough, super-tough route. I have often had better luck on SFO-JFK UA p.s. with a CR1/RDU.

Any transcon out of IAD on a 319 is terrible for upgrades, but that's not route so much as route plus equipment.

Other equipment on the same routes (including IAD-SFO on a wide body or 752) can be much easier.

I've been on a 777 between IAD-SFO once where there was atleast 62 1Ks vying for Upgrades... That's a scary thought when it comes to the A319...

SNA to anywhere. They have really cut back on the 757s out of that station. However I have heard that they will be sending more 739s instead of 319s or 320s, but, sadly, I will not see that day because at the end of December SNA will no longer be my home A/P.

CLE-IAH on some days can be near impossible... IAH-YYC on Mondays and YYC-IAH on Thursdays is impossible.

    IAH-DEN is another tough route...

EWR-SFO/LAX on Mondays typically sees north of 70 elites on Monday mornings and Thursdays/Fridays most of the SFO/LAX-EWR flights have over 30 elites. That does not include paid F customers.

The toughest route systemwide IMO is SNA-EWR with the 73Gs...

Speaking of which, I just applied a CR1 for an upcoming EWR-LAX flight on the 752 in January that only has 6 seats left in F

I took the SFO-EWR redeye a bunch of times over the summer and cleared my upgrade regularly, sometimes with a companion. The combination of a 757-300 with 24F and the undesirable flight time make these flights a bit easier to clear than the others.

I doubt you'll see 739s at SNA to anywhere save for SFO or DEN.

SFO - ORD on a Monday Morning. A 757 UA, is usually half full of elites. It has to be frustrating for a 1K sitting in the 'friendship' seat in row 23.
