I know I should've never let it get to this but I've been hung up on getting my visa support letter until today. Finally, at 5:00 today, I got it from my hotel despite repeated attempts. The problem is my flight departs tomorrow. Is it possible to get a same day visa anywhere? At the consulate in NY or DC? At one ILS location? An expediter? Russian Consulate in Europe during my layover? I'll do anything and pay whatever I have to.

I don't believe you can get your visa in Russia, you will need it upon entering the country.

Give these folks a call and see what they recommend.

Wow. That is cutting close. I got the support letter in a couple of days by using one of the "official" online services. They get the invitation from hotels, etc. To try to get it directly from a hotel is risky, as you just found out. On the bright side, I am certain that there is a same-day visa service for Russia if you are willing to pay a lot more and you can show up in person early in the morning to stand in the queue at a Russian consulate or embassy. The application and precessing would occur in the morning and they'd give you a time for you to return in the afternoon to pick up your passport. One thing you should not do is to show up in DME without a valid visa because you might be detained and your release purposely put in super slo-mo to teach you a lesson.

Definitely no vsas on arrival for Russia, and I think that same-day service would work best if one goes to those consulates that you listed rather than calling...

I went to the consulate in NY today and they said three days is the fastest, which I don't believe for a second. I'm just not sure whether to go back there, try the outsourced subcontractor or take the Acela down to DC for the actual Embassy.

NYC is a tough place for most things. I, in fact, had paid someone to go to the Russian consulate to get my visa. However, I am sure that there are places that offer same-day service:

Keep in mind that a foreign consulate is not obligated to do anything for a non-citizen of their country. Although most Russian visas do get granted, it's never in one day. So it's important to approach this task with the right attitude and expectations.

I had to visit ICS (company that processes all visa for Russia) 3 times before they would even submit my applications. Of course it doesn't help that my wife is from the former Soviet Union and all sorts of extra paperwork is needed.
