I want to ditch my netbook for something smaller and lighter for trips to Europe.

While I like the Xoom, it's too new and really not ready for prime time. So I've narrowed my choices to either the Ipod Touch or the Ipad 2. I'll use the new machine for e-mails, internet access, google maps, etc.

I have no experience with either machine, so I'm looking for some experienced hands to tell how these machines work in a travel enviromnent.

    Thanks

iPad is more of a replacement for a computer and you can get productivity applications like word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc.

iPod touch is a nice gaming device and it does allow you to do some light email and surfing the web.

Also you can get the iPad with 3G service. An iPod touch with 3G is called an iPhone :)

I find that an iPhone or iPod touch are OK for quick lookups. But if I want to do some serious web surfing or type out mid to long content, the iPad is much better.

I am with the others who have posted... definitely, the iPad is your best option. I recently replaced my netbook with one and have never regretted that decision!

Well there is something to be said for the small form factor that the iPod touch has.

But I agree that based on the OPs needs, an iPad is probably a better fit.

Of course in the perfect world, I'd go with all three: MacBook Air, iPad 2 and iPhone 4 :)

I've been using my iPod Touch 3rd generation, for the last 18 months, and have found it pretty versatile for quick emails and surfing the web.

When surfing the web, I get 2-3 hours of battery life. It's very easy to carry around, as it will just fit in your pocket. I think if you want something that you can carry everywhere without being chained down, it's fine. I also use it to listen to a lot of podcasts when flying.

I'll be getting an iPad2 next month, so will followup with a comparison.

I have an ipod touch 3rd gen and an iPad 1, I find now that I use my ipad a lot more than the ipod but I still take both away with me. The ipod I use for alarm clock, music and currency exchange and the ipad for everything else :).

IPad. Got mine two weeks ago and haven't used my iTouch sense. It's now stuck between my iPhone and the iPad.

I'd suggest going to an Apple store and playing with both devices. Try web surfing, especially on those sites you often use. Try the mail reader and other apps you think you may use (although you may not want to configure your own email account into a demo device).

We can all tell you what we'd suggest, but it really comes down to you -- what you like and don't like.

Thanks everyone. I wondered about the battery life of the Touch.

I"m headed to an Apple store and learn a little more.
