    Apple Launches iPad 2

    March 2, 2011
Apple today introduced iPad 2, featuring an entirely new design that is 33 percent thinner and up to 15 percent lighter than the original iPad while maintaining the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit LCD screen and up to 10 hours of battery life. iPad 2 also features Apple’s new dual-core A5 processor for blazing-fast performance and stunning graphics and now includes two cameras — a front-facing VGA camera for FaceTime and Photo Booth and a rear-facing camera that captures 720p HD video. iPad 2 is available in black or white, features models that run on AT&T’s and Verizon’s 3G networks, and introduces the innovative iPad 2 Smart Cover in a range of colors. iPad 2 will be available on March 11 in the US through the Apple Online Store, Apple Retail Stores, and select Apple Authorized Resellers. Looks pretty nice but I don't think I will be upgrading my first gen. iPad.

Nothing surprising...waiting until they use that new graphics power to push to a higher resolution screen to upgrade.

Any official word yet on whether the AT&T version will continue to be unlocked (I assume so) and what the data plan will look like? (I assume unchanged?)

According to the Apple site, it is still on a turn on / turn off credit card system. There are really three models: Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi + GSM, and Wi-Fi + EVDO.

I just want to see someone trying to take a photo or video with this thing. Can't wait until I see someone hold it up to their ear to make a phone call. [IMG]

Found a buyer for my 1G. So will upgrade. But I agree, not a significant upgrade.

How much did you get and what country are you in?

I'm considering selling my Gen 1 since I spend so much time in countries that won't have the iPad2 for probably 4-5 months. I just need to sell it for less than they can get a new one in that country and should do ok.

Of course it is pure speculation, but supposedly an Apple insider is saying the iPad 3 is going to be the killer device. iPad 2 is just meh.

If I can sell my first gen for enough $$ I think I will upgrade. The one question I have that I cannot find the answer to is: Is the 3G ATT one still sold unlocked?

And the iPad 4.. well... songs will be written about it, people will have knife fights to get units before they sell out. That will be the real deal Neal!

The iPad 1 was not locked and there is no reason to believe this one will be either. It will still require a micro-SIM, so you would need to trim a t-mo or other regular SIM down to size.

Looks like I'm going to be able to check the iPad2 out. Thanks, Randy!

I was looking at the CNN story on it earlier in the day, and was thinking it looked pretty nice.

Congrats. I too think it looks nice.
Don't have any Ipad yet, but would love one.

I really like the dual cameras and thinner look. I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch, which I use fairly often. If I'm using it for web surfing the battery only lasts 2-3 hours, so a bit longer battery life will be nice too.

Will upgrading to iPAD2 stop MilePoint website crashes? :) But seriously, so much ado about nothing. I am disappointed.

I suspect it will still be unlocked, but I am still debating if I even want to pay extra for 3G. I am pretty happy with my current iPad 1 (but plan on giving that to my dad).

The other important question that's unanswered, though: will it blend?

I thought it was just me that suddenly has had to kill the Firefox process 3-4 times a day since I started using MP.

  21. I will be selling my 1g and upgrading. I get to keep my unlimited data plan to boot.

Believing the iPad was coming out around this time, I sold my iPad 1 at Christmas for a pretty penny. Unsure I will get the 2nd gen without a better screen.

Even more interesting - never (OK, maybe once or twice since the start of the beta) had it crash on me on W7 Enterprise x86 and IE8 or FireFox.
