We will be stopping in Honolulu enroute to San Francisco from East Coast Australia.

How where can we get a hot shower and a course of hours sleep during the 5 hour layover?

    Thanks in advance

Buy a day pass to the AA Lounge.

    Aloha!

Consider the Honolulu Airport Hotel. It's about 5 minutes from the airport via hotel shuttle. It's not fancy, but it should provide you with a few hours sleep, a shower, and perhaps a meal. (Check the hotel's restaurant hours in relation to your plans; the food is good but the hours of operation are very strange.)
    Here's the hotel's link: https://www.outrigger.com/hotels-resorts/hawaiian-islands/oahu-waikiki/airport-honolulu-hotel/overview

Slightly farther away is the Best Western Plaza Hotel. It also offers a shuttle from the airport. Link: http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/US/HI/Honolulu-hotels/BEST-WESTERN-The-Plaza-Hotel/Hotel-Overview.do?propertyCode=12008

Enjoy your short visit and come back when you can see more!

It is a JAL Sakura lounge which AA uses and I don't believe it has showers. Nor does it have somewhere decent to sleep.

Both hotels are decent options and you could probably see if they have a day room rate as well to save money.

Admirals club has moved and the new location does not have showers.
Those are the two hotels that are the closest to the airport.

A five hour layover does not allow a lot of time to clear customs, recheck bags, get to a hotel and shower... and get back to the airport.

The hotels mentioned are the best options closest to the airport.
