The following prices out on ba.com at 17,500 miles + $13:

    JFK-LAX AA0003, Business
    LAX-HNL AA0297, Economy

    (3/27 or many other dates)

It seems to treat it as a coach Hawaii award, maybe because the second leg is slightly longer.
This is useful as-is, but I'm interested to find out if one could add a stopover and obtain the same pricing over the phone. Has anyone successfully abused AA awards in this fashion? It would seem one could also create a one-way, Caribbean -> JFK -> LAX -> HNL cheaply with partial premium cabins.

Probably not a great idea to call since they may close this loophole. I've seen this on other routes such as on RJ ORD-AMM-XXX (AMM-XXX in business) pricing out in economy. It does seem to price the class of the shorter leg of the journey only.

    It works both ways.
If you fly JFK-LAX in Business and LAX-HNL in (2 class) First it prices out as a full F redemption...
