I'm booking my first United Award Ticket post merger (I know, its been a while), but have the option of taking the points from my cousin's account (premier 1K). Does anyone know if I would still be able to inherit her status like it used to be on Continental? What benefits, if any, would I get? Thanks in advance!

Absolutely you will inherit the cousins status on the award ticket for free baggage allowance, lounge access, and EconomyPlus seating too.

Every award ticket I have booked for someone else from my account has inherited my 1K status (and this is recent too).

If your cousin has an eligible Chase credit card as well, you may even score a free upgrade (CPU eligible flights only).

I can confirm that what edcho, catgirl, and DIG/R_1K are all saying is fact.

Lounge access is not officially one of the benefits extended under this "glitch" though it often does work. If the agent just scans the BP or looks at the status printed on it then the passenger will likely get in. If they ask for credentials, not so much.

Also note that it only works if the passenger does not change/add their FF# to the reservation. Just leave it alone.

Why are you guys posting this? You must trust UA MP management.

Do you realize that if this were DL SM and such a collateral benefit existed, Jeff and his minions would use the information to identify this and eliminate it ASAP? See over on DL for examples of social media intel-gathering used to attack program benefits, which have been acknowledged by those with inside track at DL.

As an example of what happens, when I called in to get Economy Plus seats, I was silver and the other two pax were non-status. The record *looked* to the res agent like the miles came from each of our respective accounts (which INP), and it took a supervisor (and a phone call with the gold member) to verify that, even though they were all on a single PNR, the gold offered two E+ seats and I had to pay for a third -- NOT the way they were seeing a silver and two non-status pax. They got so frustrated they waived the fee for my husband's seat.

Seriously, it does really weird things to the record and I'm not talking in a positive way.

I'm trying to book award tickets for my in-laws using my miles, and the "inherited status" doesn't seem to be working. I'm Plat, so E+ should be free (when using miles from my account), but when I go to select seats, the system wants to charge me for E+ seats. I know this worked fine from my account a month or so ago, but it's not working now.

Is this a web site glitch or did UA just change the rules?

The website has been kinda wonky the past couple of days, so it may be a glitch, as I had an award res booked for me a few days ago from a UA gold's account and I inherited the status. Hopefully it will smooth out, as I am trying to book some tickets right now and keep getting errors

"Wonky." That's a technical term used often around my office in reference to our programming. ;)

An update: the issue appears to be that with an itinerary that includes a partner flight, you can't select E+ for free at the time of booking (not even for the UA legs). But after it was ticketed, I was able to go online and switch the seats to E+ for free (for the UA legs). Very odd, but it seems to be working out fine (so far -- knock on wood).

Just had the same issue without any partner flights involved -- all UA metal, tried to charge for E+ when redeeming for a family member.

To boot, the family member actually is 1P!

Did you wait to ticket before choosing seats?

As for being 1P, the UA computer wouldn't know that based on the award ticket being booked from a different account.

Did not wait to choose seats until ticketing (in the past, I could always choose E+ as part of reservation process). As it turned out, the passenger was able to choose seats from his/her own account.
