The owner of a Nazi-themed cafe in central Indonesia said Monday he has decided to permanently close down amid intense pressure from home and abroad.

Henry Mulyana, who ran the Soldatenkaffee in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung, met with local authorities Monday, and tourism chief Herry M. Djauhari suggested that Mulyana change the name and theme of the cafe.

City officials had earlier expressed concerns about the cafe's motives and worried it might incite hate and racism in the town, which is a tourist destination.

Mulyana said he is considering his options, but will not reopen the Soldatenkaffee cafe.

Wasn't there a similar cafe in Taiwan a few years ago?

This is what happens when radical religious elements want to gain mindshare. Strange that the same thing happens with both Christian and Islamic "conservative" groups. No, this isn't a slam on conservative religious groups - Southern Baptists aren't all KKK members - but nearly every "white supremacy" group will claim a Christian heritage in the US, and the "anti-Jew" factions of Islam claim a similar strict origin/interpretation on their side.

It's always tough for me to imagine that the deity of any particular religious group accepts or agrees with murder as a method of proselytization until I remember that both Christianity and Islam are based on a prophetic interpretation of an old-testament G-d to whom many atrocities were credited... including the great flood.

Strange iconography shows up in bars all the time, the US included.

There's a bar in NYC called "KGB Bar". Kind of funny -- until you think about it. I'm pretty certain there's no actual connection implied with the ethos of the KGB or Soviet Russia.

I remember a bar in Saigon called "Apocalypse Now".

While it's possible that the bar owner in Indonesia was trying to make a Nazi statement, it's also possible that he was running the Javan equivalent of KGB Bar.
