There were the airlines yesterday swearing a blood oath to JP Morgan. There will be no seat gluts (no competition) and we will adhere to seat discipline (unfettered collusion) an incredible in your face, scoff the law, unvarnished, spike the football, notorious and unconcealed public avowal that while this cartel holds the keys to the skies and presses its boot down on America's throat you might think you are seeing competition but almost for sure you are not. Actually, once again, the media was just repeating the cartel's spoon fed deceits falsely and foolishly ignoring the airlines own public self incrimination. Adding flights as the cartel assured Wall Street yesterday is not competing.

What is amazing is how much they have thwarted demand with ever fewer ordinary Americans flying and a much larger share of people spending money that is not theirs and the well to do . For a family of four to go to LA from NYC today, to bring a couple of bags, and have the privilege of sitting together, the total is at least two thousand dollars, in the veal seats, no ff miles. And that is just one of many routes seeing a total collapse of competition .
Premerger the family could go for $800, sit together comfortably. and choose a competitive carrier that awarded tons of ff miles.

    There's a spot
Where at the mouth of a long bay an island
Makes a harbor, forming a breakwater
Where every swell divides as it comes in
And runs far into curving recesses.
There are high cliffs on this side and on that,
And twin peaks towering heavenward impend
On reaches of still water. Over these,
    Against a forest backdrop shimmering,
A dark and shaggy grove casts a deep shade,
While on the cliffside opposite, below
The overhanging peaks, there is a cave
With fresh water and seats in the living rock,
The home of nymphs. Here never an anchor chain,
Never an anchor's biting fluke need hold
    A tired ship.

is a fare war breaking out? No! But this story seems to be the handiwork of A4WS. Forbes should write about the cities being pillaged by one carrier domination. It cannot because that story is not being spun by the industry. The airlines are trying to sell a grossly overpriced, decrepit, embarrassing product because that is what Wall Street is demanding. Sell America what it wants and you'll be adding capacity all over the place.
