Traffic fatalities in the state of Illinois were 923. This was the second year in a row that they remained under 1000, the first time that has happened in 88 years, since 1921.

I'm guessing safer cars and better highway design are bigger factors than the skill level of the drivers; high gas prices also kept people off the road.

What do you think are the major reasons for this safety improvement?

Maybe that's a contributing factor. All the potholes cause people to slow down and pay attention!

The potholes are also good for the economy. Two years ago we attended a mini-do that Sweet Willie organized downtown, and hit a pothole. That contributed $160 to the economy, to pay for a new tire.

That's nothing. Ther was a huge pothole on the north side we filled with water and made a kids pool. That summer the kids made over $600 in lemonade sales!

The kids cut a deal so the city inspectors could shake down their customers.
