As outlined by John from Loyaltylobby, some strong T&C for signing up for promo codes :

    http://loyaltylobby.com/2014/08/07/...o-registration-page-terms-change-small-print/

Many offers are only available to IHG® Rewards Club members who receive a specific, targeted communication from IHG. Successful registration does not guarantee that you will receive the points or miles offered when the offer requirements are met if you are not eligible per the offer terms and conditions. Six Continents Hotels, Inc.(SCH) and its subsidiaries and affiliates which are InterContinental Hotels Group companies (collectively IHG) reserve the right to cancel any IHG® Rewards Club membership and revoke any and all unredeemed IHG® Rewards Club points for fraud or abuse of any portion of the program per the IHG® Rewards Club membership terms and conditions.

I think this is nonsense, poor execution on the IHG management's part

they should police themselves, not look to penalize or chase off regular customers (who of course want as many points as possible )

Right, and now how are we going to proceed? just wait for a targeted promotion and if we never receive any?

That's how it looks like right now, or IHG could close our accounts at will.

NO, we should not accept this new rule...We are hotels' guests and no thieves.

What do you propose people should do to not accept the new rule?

While this is maybe true, I don't want that accounts are closed because of some point codes. It's by the rules I believe.

I'm surprised it took them so long. Gravy train is coming off the tracks for the faint at heart. I'm not going to gamble my 1/2 million + point average balance on a non-targeted promo code.

I believe I have 4 codes in my account (certainly not targeted).
Previously, there were over 10 but they all disappeared about a few months back.
Out of this 4, 3 was not targeted to me.
They also did not apply when I had my stays.
So they are sitting there... tempting me but doing nothing.
I would have preferred them gone but they did not disappear like the rest.
Now... until they "go away"... I am in constant worry.

Most times, in other Hotel programs (e.g. SPG, Hilton) or Airline programs (e.g. Delta), they will either tell you
    1) Congratulations.. you are registered. Now go book
    2) Thanks for the interest but you do not qualify
    3) Thanks for coming back, you are already enrolled. Now go book.

That makes it so much more simpler and clearer.

of course IHG will do whatever they like, it is their program

but whenever a management solution to a problem is to blame their customers or cut them off (alienate) altogether, there is a serious flaw in the program

I think they simply gave up trying to finetune their IT system to block non-eligible registration of promo codes, and decided finally to just include the T&Cs in the promo registration page to put the onus on the IHG account holder, as a deterrent..

I found a solution, booked 9 nights with my reward points, just in case.
It is now clear why there are recently no more promotions; unless some members received a targeted one.I think it is the best way not to push us to register and risk our account.
