Not a big fan of using my points for this. I do it with Charter CATV and My Coke Rewards because those points are so useless. I guess I might if I only had a few orphaned points in IHG.

I don't like the idea of having to "pay" to enter a contest or sweepstakes, even with hotel points or FF miles, as they're too valuable in their own right for getting flights or hotel rooms without spending them for a contest whose odds of not winning anything are tremendous.

This is especially true since IHG points does not expire and there are sufficient opportunities to dispose (redeem) them.

I however do not mind using some points to extend the expiry date for programs where activity is required.
The kind I dislike most are programs who will expire earned miles and points regardless of account activity in a bid to prevent the company's liability from growing too big.

Agree that using some points/miles to keep some otherwise inactive programs from expiring. Most programs let you donate some miles or points to one of their charities, and that may be the only way for some people (those who live in a different country then the program issuer) to keep their membership alive.
