If your Skype is crashing today, it isn't (just) your computer

    Skype is very unstable today.
What you may see is that it starts to "login" and then you get an error message that Skype needs to close.
A manual fix has been posted here:
    http://heartbeat.skype.com/

I know a lot of MPers depend on Skype- so hopefully the quickfix works for you (it did for me).

Thanks for posting this... I was having a terrible time trying to figure out why my Skype was not working right this morning.

Just about the same time that secretsea18 was posting I received a phone call from my UIG (Used Italian Girlfriend) who was speaking via Skype from China.

Apparently this is a problem in underdeveloped countries like the US but not in technologically advanced countries such as China.

But after I got home and found the Skype problem persisting, I did the 'upgrade' as Skype suggested, and 'voila!' .... all fixed. :)

Similar issue from the end users point of view again today (however technically apparently it is a "configuraiton" issue).

Haven't used skype since Friday; tried loading it today, it loads, then shuts down. Downloaded the latest update version, it still does that- it launches but shuts within a few seconds.

Launches fine for me (MacOS) and while I haven't used it for voice calls for a few days, I do have no problems staying connected and sending text messages.

Gargoyle- check heartbeat.skype.com- there should be a fix there for you (look at the posts ~27MAY). Good luck.

MacOS seems to be less affected based on reports and also the colleagues at my office on MAC OSX are not having problems- strange given that skype claimed it was a "confirguration issue".

Did that. They claim nothing is wrong. I also downloaded a fresh version and installed it.
It launches, minimizes, and closes; it won't stay open.

Some people are switching to Google Voice. Odd rumors are going around eastern european intertubes that MS will open back doors in skype for various governments to peek in, and that the current mess is part of some core reprogramming of skype.

Strange... Check with Tuneup utilities- that fixes a lot of problems on the computer.

    The windows fix trilogy:
    1. Reboot
    2. Update/Patch
    3. Reinstall the app
(step 4 is reinstall windows, but I only got that far once)

I also am using Webex as a back up- had too many issues recently with Skype.

The deal hasn't even closed yet and MS has no control over Skype. I am not a lawyer, but I have been through a number of mergers/acquisitions and the involved companies were always very careful to continue to operate completely independently until the closure of the deal (eg, no joint selling, no coordination of product plans, no sharing of confidential information). So I think "odd rumors" is an appropriate term.

Agreed- as funny as it is to joke about Microsoft- it is just not possible to be the case in this case.
I am not a lawyer either- but can imagine there are some stressful moments in the deal right now.

Agreed. It doesn't take much for "odd rumors" to damage a company on the internet, so MS should put a squelch on Nikolai Pryanishnikov.

Quite frankly, I was shocked to read that quote. It seems to be one of the dumbest things he could have said, and I'd bet cash that MS management in Redmond is anything but thrilled about it.

    Some back-paddling from Microsoft:
