does anyone have a sense of which alliance they would be part of? As a Platinum Elite with US, can I safely assume I would have similar status with the new entity? Does anyone think this will really happen?

    Thanks

I am not a fan of US air. Does that mean AA members would have to fly those old aircrafts that US air fly's?!?!

US has some very nice new aircraft, including the 7,000 Airbus plane made (an A321). If US and AA merge the combined air lie would more than likely stay in OneWorld.

Given the Thrans-Atlantic JBA with BA and IB, the Trans-Pacific JBA with JL, and the other Trans-Pacific JBA with QF, I think it's a safe bet AA will stick with oneworld. US has always been the wicked step-child in *A.

I feel the same - but that would also mean I have almost no Star Alliance miles. Having just completed a trip including Lufthansa First Class, I would miss that!

In bankruptcies and mergers, everything is up for grabs, but like most on here, I can't imagine AA leaving oneworld.

Now, fantasizing a little. Maybe I've been watching too many GM commercials, but let's see here. We have oneworld and the Star Alliance. Put US and AA together, and it makes it only natural to put them into onStar, correct? If you get locked out of an Admirals Club by a hyper drAAgon who refuses to recognize your Citi Executive Aadvantage World Elite MasterCard as a valid credential, just call onStar and they remotely push a button that unlocks the door and zaps the drAAgon, I suppose. . .

While a bankruptcy court indeed has broad powers, we also need to consider the DOJ.

I'd struggle to see the DOJ let AA merge with US and switch to *A. That would give one marketing group an overwhelming share of the US travel market. I could see a merger being OK'd (US is a non-issue in most markets), but with OW being a requirement from DOJ.

It won't be SkyMiles, eh ... that'll be left to DL and Alaska!

Given that UA and CO merged, the relationship with US and *A has probably been tense. Personally, I reckon US missed the boat when the suggestion of a merge with UA fell through.

Is there any possibility that a non-USA airline might pick up a stake in US? Maybe Singapore Airlines or one of Etihad/Qatar/Emirates? They might like having an USA airline, wouldn't they?

A stake? Why not. LH owns about 20% of B6, for example. But a takeover (or even ownership > 25%) would not be possible under current law.

My feeling is that I think AA is better than US. However, I think Star is better than One World. One World likes to style itself as the 5-star alliance. But frankly, I'm not sure I buy that. While Star was gobbling up airlines, they dawdled and spent a lot of time on the joint BA-IB-AA JV over the Atlantic.

The decision isn't really AA's, however. US management has a lot to gain...

If AA left oneworld, oneworld would probably collapse.

I have an even better speculative question. What would happen if OneWorld and Skyteam merged. :)

I think United would be happy to get rid of US Airways. Making United the only carrier in the USA a member of the Star Alliance. I would be happy with American and US Airways merging. It would be a negative for American Express Centurion cardholders like myself as I don't think Citi would allow Amex to offer the elite status and also Membership Rewards.

It's 2012 and I see in the back of the latest American Way that Mexicana is still a member of the Oneworld Alliance. When is Oneworld finally going to except the fact that Mexicana isn't coming back.

The AA flight attendant on my recent long haul from NRT to DFW seemed to think so.
