need a couple of segments on united metal to keep status (miles mostly long hauls on other carriers) so looking out for cheapest flights from ORD for in and out trips. Any brilliant thoughts on destinations to check?

    TIA

Go for a nice dinner in NY or San Francisco. :)

Drive up to MKE. Take a flight somewhere via ORD. That's 4 segments.

As for where to go, are you looking to just do a same-day turn or actually visit somewhere?

use a tool that lets you check several destinations at once, like ITA Matrix (assuming it's working today...). You can ask it for same-day turns (0 night stays) for a month at a time. Rule of thumb: the bigger the airport, the more likely there are sane fares on at least one day.

Beyond that, I think Seth's question would drive the process. If you want to just get it done, look close in: MSP, MCI, DTW, STL, PIT. If you want to make it more of a fun trip... PHL, NYC, ATL, SFO, LAX, SEA, etc. WAS might be particularly cheap. The tourist cities (LAS, MCO) are always worth checking.

I like the drive to MKE idea also. How about ORD-STL, DTW or MSP. You might be able to get a better fare to some further places but these would be quick flights to save you time. You could do several in one day.

fabulous ideas! thanks for the help. More concerned about the quick, cheap segments so the MSP route sounds ideal. Always up for a great Philly deal, though, too. Thanks, again

There haven't been too many PHL deals for a while, EWR or BWI seen to price out better.

WN is having a fare sale $59.00 and up on short haul, you might find UA matching some prices even though they would be out of ORD, fare sale lasts until Thursday

EWR would not be bad. Jump on the train(s) and go have a nice meal in the city then fly home. :)
