I need 1800 miles to get Platinum status on American Airlines by the end of December 2013. What is the cheapest and fastest route out of either Geneva or Zurich to get this?

Have you checked Finnair using ITA? They usually have cheap flights, though you have to be careful to make sure you pick a fare that earns EQMs. They have some excursion flight numbers that I think don't accrue.

Not sure cheapest and fastest are compatible in your time frame. A quick look suggests something like ZRH/BCN on IB may earn the required miles (you get on 80% miles on cheap flights) but cost? Not sure.

Looks very promising! Now to either call the airline or find a place to book the good deal on ITA. Going Kayak or Finnair directly doesn't give me the 300 CHF fare, only about double that!

OK but the OP needs 1800 miles The ZRH/DUS R/T is only 528 miles.
I also note on the EF site that the fare above seems to be a W fare which gives only 25% of status miles.

Secondly I would not wait until 12/31 to do this with the outside chance of getting delayed for wx or anything else that can go wrong.
Whereas if it was an AA flight which got screwed up he might be able get the miles by claiming "original credit".... there is very little chance he would granted such
    on a AB flight.
