I don't know if this general question would help anyone else.

I need 4000 more miles to book a would be rather expensive international trip. My 80k AMEX points don't do much good, nor do my 60k Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Obvious answer is to get a CC (which I had for years but just canceled last year). If I apply right now the miles won't post for at least a month, most likely three (guessing here).

So are my options to buy miles? I don't find many people that found transferring worth it.

So, if you needed x miles on AA, what direction would you know?

Buying miles is the quickest, and with the current 50% bonus offer, may be the most economical. Other options, with various levels of immediate results:

    Dining network
    AAdvantage eShopping Mall
    Citi credit cards
    SPG point transfer
    Mileage run

If it's only 4000 miles, unless you have a SPG stash I'd just go ahead and either buy or MR, unless the CCs are in your immediate plans anyway. If you really, really didn't want to go out of pocket you could move the Amex points over, but not at a reasonable ratio.

    I'd likely just buy.

Is there a current Netflix offer for AA?

I am pretty sure all Netflix bonuses were pulled recently across all travel programs, unless I'm mistaken...

Could be. I haven't really looked in recent months.

    Note the question mark :)

I would just buy. It makes sense if you are that close to a large redemption. Applying for a CC, even if you hit spend the first week, could take up to a month to post, and if they have any random issues with crediting or not using your AAdvantage number, then you'd be hosed. I'd put the award on hold today, then buy miles and then book it.

Ended up being $193.56 USD for 6500 AA miles. Not ideal but worked well.
