Great news for Hyatt fans, Diamonds, and holders of the 2-night suite certificates from the Chase CC: Hyatt will open a new property along Phuket's Millionaire's Mile near Kamala Beach later on this year - 2013!

Very nice -- although I have to admit, I'm still partial to the JW Marriott Khao Lak... As long as it stays quiet up there (which is anybody's guess as to how long that lasts..)

Many are unhappy that the Le Meridien Khao Lak is leaving SPG just after this, so if this is nice enough, it could be a good replacement.

Sounds like this is an entirely new hotel. Should be interesting.

Wow, I just looked up where that is (heading to Phuket for the first time this year) and saw that Khao Lak is basically equidistant between Bangkok and Phuket. It would make more sense to take a taxi from our hotel in Bangkok than to go to the airport, fly, and take a taxi there.

I could be wrong, but I'm showing its 9 hours from Bangkok. Its about 1.5-2 hours from HKT.

I've done the drive once from HKT to JW Marriott Khao Lak, but now take a transfer (just keeps the white knuckling on a vacation to a minimum). Where do you plan on staying?

Ha, I just did a search for "Khao Lak" in general, and found myself in the middle of nowhere.

Khao Lak is ~ 90 minutes' drive from the HKT airport. The HKT airport is a 417 mile flight from BKK. ;)

Khao Lak Beach where Le Meridien & the JW Marriott are located is not really in Phuket. As mentioned above, Khao Lak is 45 miles/90 minutes drive northwest of HKT ... a drive that will take you over the Thepkasattri Bridge and out of the "island" itself. There is a national park and great beaches at Khao Lak but hardly anything else of interest as it is in the middle of no where ...

On the other hand, the new Hyatt property is located at Kamala Beach which is the bay immediately north of Phuket's most popular beach, Patong Beach. The location makes this property unique as you will have the best of both worlds. Kamala is a village that has some bars, restaurants, a nice quite beach, and also the Fantasea theater ... so it is mainly for rest and relaxation. But when you have had enough R&R and ready to play, take the 15-minute drive to Patong. Taxi or Tuk-Tuk between the two is THB 300-400 ($10-13) each way.

Thanks for the information Kalboz. I am from Singapore and it would be great to have another Hyatt here in Asia, especially as Phuket is a popular tourist attraction

So when a new Hyatt is opening, anyone know how far in advance you can try to get award nights?

The official announcement states: "Expected to open in late 2013", and as for your second question, I called Hyatt and they had no clue! Mybe @Hyatt Gold Passport Concierge can give us more information, or, @Jeff Zidell during the upcoming conversation.

Hopefully, the property will open by the start of the high season November/December ...

Yeah - I'm hoping to sneak in a booking while availability is good. Pending, of course, details on the place.

Does anyone have any insight as to whether there may be a club lounge?

Definitely agree that closer to town yet still quiet could be a significant draw.

Thanks - Sorry I missed that the first time Kalboz -- This Hyatt is definitely on my list for 2014 (not sure I'll make it back to Thailand a third time in 2013).

    When do you head back?

I emailed Hyatt a few weeks ago to ask if they had any more info about this property yet. No response - not even a form response.

From what we have heard, club lounge will be similar in style to Hua Hin (i.e. outside separate pavilion near a pool). Hotel is basically ready and will definitely open by end of the year (although how many times have we heard that before). We hope to add on to QR fare.
Hotel is designed as multiple smaller buildings, each with 20ish rooms in. I can ask for more information from my contact (regional DSM) if anyone has specific questions.

I'm trying to book this but they can't seem to find it -- but it sounds like there is a Park Hyatt Phuket coming in too...

Maybe a stupid question, but if they are "coming, December 2013" then shouldn't they be accepting reservations already? I have more time, looking at a visit in March, but, having seen how openings slide, I'm cautious, shall we say.

Anyone know what category this hotel will fall under by any chance?

Given that a night in a regular room seems to cost 15,000 points, I'd say category 4.
