Last year, Gerard Taylor and his family spent a relaxing week at a resort in Lost Pines, Tex., enjoying a range of activities including horseback riding, golfing and hiking.

The family greatly welcomed the break from the daily grind, which came courtesy of Taylor’s employer, Hyatt Hotels.

At each of its properties around the country, Hyatt selects an employee of the year. Winners must demonstrate a commitment to excellent customer service and an ability to work cooperatively with other team members.

The winners get an all-expenses paid trip to share with their immediate family to any destination in the United States where Hyatt has a property. In addition to free air fare, lodging and dining, the employee receives assistance from Hyatt in planning activities and excursions at their destination.

That is a really nice reward from Hyatt to an employee. The free nights to all employees is great too.

If it's valid at any destination in the U.S. where Hyatt has a property, and the company is picking up all of the expenses, I'm surprised the visit wasn't to Oahu, Maui, or Kauai.

But different people have different tastes.

And those that 'suffer' from Oahu-itis, Maui-itis, or Kauai-itis, usually have a chronic condition requiring a visit to cure these ailments.

Especially if you 'suffer' from one of the aforementioned ailments and you're based in the Continental U.S., Alaska, or other parts of the world.

My spouse is a Hyatt employee and they do get a dozen free nights (subject to availability) each year. Most us properties also give 50% discount on non alcoholic F&B. The treatment is a different story and varies a lot. We have had regular rooms and penthouse suites
