HSBC announced today that they are again offering free American Five-Star service for their Premier Banking customers this festive season. I use this service as often as possible when it's free (and am willing to pay for it some of the time, too!).

I've already made three bookings for two adults with the service for this Christmas - a $600 value!

If you have a Premier account at HSBC and are flying AA to one of their focus airports, it's worth trying.

While HSBC's email only lists JFK, MIA and LAX, I suspect that is a product of cut-and-paste from last Christmas, when those were the only fields that offered the service. Five-Star service is offered at over a dozen domestically any abroad.

My detailed report on the benefits of AA Five-Star service can be found here: http://bit.ly/oySQs7

    Dear NYBanker:
From November 15, 2011 through January 15, 2012, receive American Airlines® Five Star ServiceTM compliments of HSBC Premier when you fly into and out of New York Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport or Miami International Airport.

A personal Five Star Service representative will meet you curbside or at your arrival gate, assist with baggage and check-in, help expedite your way through security and escort you to an American Airlines Admirals Club® lounge.

You may visit the website at aa.com/fivestarservice. Call 877-5STAR-02 (578-2702) and mention HSBC Premier client code --- to book your reservation today.

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Ireland
    Executive Vice President
    Head of Premier Banking
    HSBC Bank USA, N.A.

This offer should be valid through the ow megado. It will create a lot more interest.

UPDATE: I contacted customer service and they replied that I will receive an email shortly. I guess they're sending them out in batches.

    (my original post/question below)
Strange...I'm a Premier customer and last year I got the email, but nothing this year. Also, there's no mention of it on the Premier Privileges website.

Did you get this email from the banking or credit card side so that I can follow-up with them?

This looks like a wonderful VIP type service at American Airlines. It is just one of the reasons I love American Airlines. It would be nice to be able to purchase this service using American Airlines frequent flyer miles.

This is a really nice perk.

Now that Citi is eliminating the AAdvatage debt card, maybe it's time to reevaluate Citigold. I certainly don't get perks like this one from Citi.

It really is. I'd drop hsbc premier at this point if it weren't for this program, frankly. I simply keep a cd there slightly over the Premier minimum to get this benefit each year. I really don't make any transactions (though I add a little to the cd to avoid dormancy) there. I figure it saves me $1,000 (all after tax dollars) each year.

If you have a little extra cash to park, hsbc would be a good spot to do it.

If it is anything like the price of using miles for the AA club membership, it would be an inefficient use of miles.

My understanding is that the Premier customers are NOT part of the business they are selling to CapOne, what they are selling is the low end business they purchased from Household Finance.

So is this good for US people? What are the requir for premier? I've gathered it's 100k with them - is that right? I'll check their cd rates.

Someone did the caclulations recently on FT and found that BankDirect is in many cases a better deal due to the miles you get every month (rather than 0-1% interest). Not sure of HSBC's US rates, as I'm not a US customer, but I would consider BankDirect as well if you're thinking about a move.

FYI, two separate agents on different days have confirmed that the HSBC offer does only work at these three airports. They say that Five-Star service at any other airport will need to be purchased as usual.

I actually benefit from hsbc in more ways than just this program...it is helpful to have what is probably the most international retail bank available to me anywhere in the world that I need to be.

If you were to simply say "I'm going to park $x, what's best," the analysis would depend on how much you value five star service and how many times you'll use it during the two month period that they offer it.

Hsbc offers other high end gimmicks from time to time for premier customers...they ran a thing where if you move in $50k of new money, they'd give you an iPod touch. As luck would have it, my wife wanted an iPad touch, so I moved $50k there for a while.

I wouldnt tie up as much money as I do there if it weren't for the global retail network however...but free 5* is the proverbial icing on the cake for me!

For the record, I tried using this benefit on two different occasions last week (for flights end of November) and was told that they were "fully booked" for HSBC customers, but that they can accommodate me if I pay. I.e., this is a "limited availability" promo. Therefore, it is less useful than it seems -- more of a gesture, really. For the record, one of the days I tried to use it was Thanksgiving day -- at night -- (a very low traffic period!) and they couldn't accommodate me, so I think they really only take very, very few HSBC customers per day. So if you want to use this promo, you should contact them sooner rather than later.
