How would this standby for an earlier flight work?

To the experts: If someone is confirmed in coach on a 3 class trans-con, and went standby for the earlier flight which is a two class and first is available and selling dirt cheap, can you standby/buy up to first, avoiding at least the change fee?

You'd need to CFC for $75 to get a shot on the upgrade list for the new flight. Otherwise as a standby the GA will clear all other elites on upgrade waitlist including EXP, PL and GL first regardless of your status. If any seats remain after that then standbys are proceeds based on elite level.

Standby upgrades very rarely (i really mean never) work for me. Plus I hate that the $75 fee for confirmed flight changes is not waived or even discounted even for elites.
