There are plenty of trains you can get, but as above comments state need to get bus/train to the railway stations. Should be straightforward from MXP - tickets could cost around 15/20 euros will take about 3 hours by train

Actually I stand corrected: there's a train from MXP to Milano Centrale (Central Railways station) and then from there you can catch the aforementioned Freccia Rossa (Red Arrow) to Florence http://www.malpensaexpress.it/en/

    I've never got it.
Usually from Milano Centrale Railways Station I get the Malpensa Shuttle, a bus which goes directly to MXP and viceversa.

To be clear, MXP has Tren Italia service. You can purchase a single train ticket from MXP to Florence Centrale, or anywhere else. You'll take a local train from MXP and change at either Milan Centrale or (I think) Milan Nord where you will change to a main line train (of which there are a number of types and classes of service).

The fastest link will be by way of the Via Emilia and Bologna (worth a visit), but you can also go by way of Genoa, the Ligurian coast, the Cinque Terre (see this week's NY Times travel section) and Pisa.
