Looking to buy an engagement ring in Cartier which is around $8000. I seldom make such a big purchase and would like to earn more points or miles out of it.

I 've searched around but failed to find any online store that can earn more than 1 point per dollar spent.

Is there a good strategy or card I can apply to make use of this opportunity to earn more miles for my honey moon

    Thanks

How exactly were you looking? evreward.com is your friend

As far as cards, get one that fits your needs with a large bonus and your ring will get you the necessary spend right away.

I am pretty sure most of the nice jewelry stores like Cartier won't have any special mile/point bonus through those online malls. Your best option if you're paying via credit card is to just find what gives you the highest amount per $ spend at retailers.

Also, it never hurts to try and negotiate. Not sure if they will budge but you gotta try because other jewelry stores will.

You can always get 2 new credit cards with high sign on bonuses and then split the payment on the ring on the cards to get to the spend requirement. This could a great way for you to pickup 100,000 to 150,000 miles. That is good start for miles needed on a first class vacation or honeymoon!

Totally agree. Even if you find a merchant giving 2x or 3x on purchases, $8,000 will "only" give you 16k or 24k miles. Not bad, but...

    why not shoot for 100k?

I'm not sure what cards you have, but if you are a clean slate and open to getting different cards, I'd suggest jumping on the two Citi/AAdvantage cards. For both cards, you need to spend $5,000 in the first 12 months to get your 50k miles, for a total spend of $10,000 in 12 months and 100k miles. Spend $8,000 on the ring and your almost there.

Also, just did a quick search on evreward and found that Zales offers 4 AA miles for every $1 spent if you go through through the AA shopping portal. Now, you're looking at 36,000 more AA miles!

Between the credit card bonus and the AA shopping portal at Zales, you could net 136,000 miles! Makes dropping 8 grand on a ring a lot less painful!

    I agree.
I already got these two cards and I plan on using the 8000 on them.

I would love to buy from Zales as well. But unfortunately my girl has this little fantasy about Cartier and I am going to try to surprise her.

I can't imagine dropping 8k on a ring at Zales. Or on any combination of things at Zales.

Of course, an alternative would be to get a nice cubic zirconium ring and buy a Tiffany's box on eBay. Then again, I have not had the nerve to try that on my wife in the last 41 years!

More important than the miles, congratulations. Make sure you guys end up in the right 50%!

For my girl it was Tiffany. I took the same approach. They won't negotiate, but I took care of some high minimum spend requirements.

And now I have some kind of elite status with Tiffany. Maybe Cartier will match it.

Maybe can pay with a bunch of $500 Visa gift cards bought at OfficeMax using your Chase Ink Bold? $8,000 = 40,000 UR points, 4,000 points short of getting two nights at the Park Hyatt Vendome in Paris ... an Eiffel Tower proposal? :D

***EDIT*** There's also a 50K offer on the Chase Ink Bold card floating around after spending $5,000 in 3 months, which you'd easily hit, giving you a total of 90,000 UR points.

You pay the ring with them. They are as good as cash...if they take Visa and stuff. Shouldn't be a problem.

For something as expensive as an engagement ring, I'd want the full protection that paying with a credit card would give me. That is the one caveat of using gift cards to pay for something.

Probably not a good idea. I would bet, that after 41 years of marital bliss, she would do two things:
1 - Take it right to a jeweler and have it appraised.
2- Put a tail on you because she would wonder why, after all these years you would buy that kind of ring?
She would wonder who you're sneaking around with.

I thought u said buying the OfficeMax gift card.

I don't know if I can apply for the ink bold card since I don't have any business; and I applied for 2 chase cards back in Jan. where else u think I can buy the visa gift card ?

For a luxury jewelry store like Cartier, I would expect I get protection by paying with gift card as well. Am I right?

Different strokes for different folks! My wife would probably throw me out of the house if I spent that much money on a diamond.
