It's late on a Friday afternoon and I've lost my motivation to work... and it occurred to me that frequent flyers might enjoy some really stupid trips that you could do.

It started with flights between the same city names, e.g. YQY-SYD (Sydney, NS, CA to Sydney, NSW, AU) but that's actually a trip with some purpose since the cities are across the world from another.

Then, it occurred to me? what about YAM-SSM? Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They are across the border from one another; they're practically the same city. But you can fly it! $1,274 for YAM-YYZ-DTW-SSM. 22.2 km by road, less if you fly. (Which you probably won't want to do after 7:01 in the air to go 22 kilometres.)

Nearly as pointless, for $764, you can fly YQG-YYZ-ORD-DTW (or just YQG-YYZ-DTW if you want to be less silly) to go 32.3 km between Windsor airport, Windsor, ON and Detroit Coleman Young Airport in Detroit, MI.

Can you find any other pointless air journeys? Might be fun to do one of these, just because - for the miles, of course. There is no other reason to do this other than to say that you did. And these prices are return trips, because you wouldn't want to drive back, would you? :)

What's pointless about that? Many a time I have gone IAD-BWI back when ACA had nonstop
service, but sometimes on mainline via SFO.

Well any major city will have multiple airports and make it ridiculous... now if they're actually bookable for whatever reason that's another story.

I just saw TEB-LGA for $3k on hipmunk. 11 miles, or you can stretch it to 27 miles if you keep going on to JFK, but then the price doubles :)

They're almost always going to be bookable if nothing else via end-on-end fares.

There was recently a United charter: SJC-OAK, and United doesn't normally fly to OAK.

YYZ-YUL-YTZ? One way to get downtown from Toronto's Pearson International Airport. And earn 1000 status miles for your trouble. :D

Detroit Coleman Young (which is named for a former mayor) is DET and hasn't had flight service for a number of years. Once upon a time Southwest came in there and later they had service by an outfit called ProAir which had a total of four planes and I actually used it a few times and could be on I94 ten minutes after the plane got to the gate.... though there was one trip when one of ProAir's planes was down for a mechanical and they bussed us to DTW which I had driven by about an hour before..

Another interesting one is TriCity Michigan (MBS) to TriCities, Tenn (TRI) --- it's any easy one to do, two segments via Detroit Metro (aka DTW!)

That means the Windsor to Detroit "flight" is a little further - I measured the road distance to Coleman Young airport, not realizing that was DET and not DTW.

Still, a pretty silly trip to take unless you're a miles hound or have an aviation bucket list. :)

Wait a doggone minute! I am flying SJC-LAX-SFO-HNL and back just next month. Could have flown SFO-HNL direct for less money. :)

The difference is 8 miles in the Detroit area -- but the airports for the two Soos are some 70 miles apart.

I flew JFK-HPN once, via RIC and FLL. It was part of JetBlue's AYCJ so no real cost other than the pass I had already bought and my time.

    Hey! I flew that!

I once flew JFK-LAX-SLC-BUR to get an extra 1100 MQM and hit Gold on the LAX-SLC segment.

Not so much a pointless trip as a ludicrously detoured one, if you want to travel from Malta to the very nearby Italian-owned islands of Lampedusa or Pantelleria, which are literally minutes away by plane (or boat, if a boat trip existed), you have to go via Sicily, with a substantial stopover.

We also have our own fairly pointless internal flight - Valletta (Grand) harbour to Gozo harbour. All about the experience of course.

Now we need to convince someone to fly one of these routes and make a MilePoint report... :)

The helicopter from MLA to GZM is no longer flying, right? That was a fun ride back in the day.

Given the total travel time with the drive, wait and ferry I can see the flight from Valletta to Gozo as quite convenient. What equipment are they using there?

Somebody on my BOS-ORD on AA was actually connecting to DCA. If you're taking two flights to get somewhere, that are each longer than a nonstop would be, I would argue that is the baseline for pointless trips.

Even better I flew LGA-ORD-CLT-BOS to get to a meeting. And the same way back. My colleagues thought I was crazy. But I got a bunch of miles and it cost no more than Amtrak

Yes of course, I know plenty about roundabout routings (I had a BOS-Middle East flight on hold once through DFW on a single fare ;)). I'm just thinking I would rather get to DCA quicker and take a MR to/through somewhere warm (ORD in the middle of December voluntarily is rather desperate, personally I was going to STL so I didn't have a choice). Also someone on my ORD-STL connecting to LGA but that makes a little more sense to me.
