Let's get to know each other better...

In an effort to interconnect members.....how many languages do you speak

    Fluent in French and English.

    Decent understanding: Italian, Spanish, German

Rusty but still understand Zime dialect from Chad.

We soon will learn that MP is indeed an international forum.

Do you count various computer programming languages? If so, I'll have to add them up; if not, then just English.

Speak best: West Coast dialect of American English, specifically Oregonian
Learned to speak after being here 25 years (finally): Japanese
Studied for years in school, but now can only say "Hello", "I speak ..." and count to three: Russian, French
Can recognize that you are speaking this language (I can't) only because I lived there for four years: German
Would like to learn this language so I can totally confuse door-to-door salespeople: Klingon

I am sooooo jealous. We just didn't have the opportunity to travel extensively when we were young, so no additional languages for us. Our lucky daughter did get to travel a lot as a teenager and as a result speaks Danish, Spanish, French and, of course, English.

We have talked about studying Spanish when we retire. It is funny, when we are in a store in Miami everybody always speaks to me first in Spanish, while they speak to Joe first in English, so I guess I must look like a Cuban.

English, Swedish and Lavantallerisch. The last is a dialect in our valley (southern Austria) and it would be an insult to consider it German. People outside the valley seem to struggle with understanding the older folk. With that being said, I guess I can manage well enough in German too.

Moving to Skåne, so I will need to freshen up on my Danish!

It is easy when you are a kid. I grew up speaking German and French, English came along naturally as the global language and Japanese from living in Japan for a long time. My kids are perfectly tri-lingual. I tried to learn Spanish as an adult as it is spoken widely in southern California but so far haven't gotten very far.
