    Am new to the forum and to all the techniques espoused in these parts. I just yesterday applied for the Amex Starwood card. For those who have had the card for some time, how difficult is it get a free room once you have the requisite points? Does Starwood limit the number of rooms available for awards?

    The only limitation would be whether or not standard rooms are available for the time you want to stay. Awards can also be had for upgraded room types at most properties, but these are subject to black out dates and capacity controls, unlike standard awards.

    Wow. What a great forum. I never expected to get an answer directly from Starwood. I will be preferring Starwood properties going forward. Thank you.

    I've never found a time when I'm unable to get a room using points. Even on special events like NYE and other holidays, it seems that there are rooms available.

    Free rooms are not hard to get;
    C&P is another matter; as those I believe are capacity controlled.

    That is true. I often find hotels that don't have C&P rooms available.

    Agree. But can't remember the last time I couldn't get an award room. Also, I've found that the properties have some flexibility in redeeming points for suites, etc to meet different needs.

    Never have had a problem getting an award night. Including the Sheraton at the Pier in Old San Juan both before and after a cruise. (and it is a relatively small Sheraton)

    I like that property. They have a pretty decent suite on the top floor I was lucky to get the last two times I was there.

    That is the one I got. Great room with views overlooking the pier and Fuerte de San Cristobal.

    And just FYI for the new member, if you don't see anything available, call. In 30 calls over the years I've never hit an agent who wasn't helpful and knew at least the basics of the program. Sometimes they offer premium rooms at slightly higher redemption levels or once in a great while the 50% off rack redemption makes sense.

    Yeah, starwood is top notch. Admittedly I haven't dealt much with their phone people outside of the Platinum Concierge, but in general they are very good on the service side. Also great on twitter etc.

    Starwood has excellent availability for award nights. In the past I've been able to use points to get rooms that would have been very expensive otherwise.
