How Do You Pass the Time When Dining Alone?

For many of us when traveling, especially for work, we may end up eating alone at times.

I usually take a book or people watch...always amusing things to see out there. :D

I like people watching too, but it's a fine line between watching and staring ;)
I vary my strategy depending on time ( lunch/dinner) and location ( cafe/ Lounge or restaurant ).
In the airport I usually have my iPad and phone on the table. At dinner in restaurant just the phone, minimal use and try to relax and people/ couple watch. In a cafe or casual dining situation I will quite happily read a newspaper or book.
Often wondered what people did before cell phones existed ??

I was brought up to have dinner with my family on the dining table every night, so I hate to be eating alone. In fact, If I have to dine alone, usually I just get some take-outs and eat at home.

Fortunately, as I get older and have to live and travel alone, I have managed to overcome this aversion little by little. Otherwise I would be missing out on the club/lounge access benefit :) . Still do not prefer it though and usually will read a book/newspaper or bring my iPad/laptop to keep me company. I like to people watch too, but it isn't as fun to do it alone as with someone to share your comments with ;)

As was I, even during the summer, Mom would ring the bell & dinner was served, you came home, PERIOD !!

I like eating out alone as it allows me to go try places that may be too off the radar for a first time visit by Mrs Sweet Willie.
I go with people watch & if 'nothing good' I'll check the mobile for news, email, etc.

Book, newspaper, newsmagazine, iPhone with book/newspaper/newsmagazine. If you include all the papers waiting in my Sente reading list, I have well over 1000 pages of material that I need to get through at some point. I haven't bought a book in over a year, and I'm still behind (I'm just about to finish the books I received for Christmas).

I actually have a rule with my family: I don't have to talk until after breakfast if I don't want to. It takes some time to warm up the ol' interpersonal processing unit.

I have to agree with cennas. I as well was brought up to have dinner with the family. Ever since I've been struggling to make good friends while moving between schools, I've resorted to setting at home while watching TV or Hulu so kill the time. It definitely sucks and makes me miss my parents but something I have to deal with. If I have no TV or computer, I will just people watch and eat a fast meal that wouldn't require me sitting there for a rather long time. Definitely should consider finding a significant other to spend the time with :(

Interesting alternative! Ever someone found nearby who joined you on the table for dinner through Google+?

I catch up on e-mail, map out upcoming activities such as lectures or articles, get on MP, or work on other daily goals. While I'll notice architecture and aesthetic features, I'm not a people watcher.

I need to read something, even the used car guide would be better than nothing. Reading something on my BlackBerry or small laptop is not a good choice if I'm having something like a grilled sandwich or anything else greasy.

Reading my phone, book or magazine (whatever is in my bag). I try not to read articles for work as I cannot concentrate enough when eating, but I will carry a scribble pad for notes.

My iPad makes a great dining companion. In a pinch, my iPhone does too.

People watch and take my time with the food. Sometimes the food is better when you are alone and can concentrate on the tastes rather than just "eating" and reading.

FIrst of all, if I have to dine alone, this definitely impacts my choice of dining venues. I much prefer a casual place or cafe over a nice restaurant where sitting by myself with an iPad would seem more out of place (*). I used to bring magazines or newspapers, but nowadays it's pretty much always my iPad. I have plenty of material that I need to read, so the quiet time is welcome.

(*) One time, about five or six years ago, I was admonished by a waiter at the University Coffee Cafe (a slightly more upscale coffee house in Palo Alto, CA) that they didn't allow laptops on the table during dinner hours. Fine, I pulled out my newspaper, and I haven't been back since then even though I am very often in the neighborhood.

iPod with recorded books let me people watch and enjoy the food at the same time. Earbuds are subtle and this even works at very upscale places. Just a finger touch lets me pause if need be.

I may have to get a more subtle set of earbuds, but I like that idea. Podcasts instead of books, though.

Breakfast or lunch? I probably have the newspaper. Dinner (or sometimes lunch), I'll try and eat at a restaurant with a bar, and eat at the bar.
