How do you book a 75k mile AKL-NYC-AKL trip with the least $$$ in fees?

I'm trying to use up my AAdvantage miles on an upcoming AKL-NYC-AKL trip in April/May. It seems I can get it for 75k return miles but some of the taxes/fees are pretty outrageous.

Can anyone recommend a cheap way to redeem these miles? Possible routings, what to tell the AA agents when calling from overseas? (don't want to spend all day on the phone as it will get pricey) etc.

    thanks!

Perhaps you can help us start by tell us what you've already tried for routings and the fees you found? Otherwise we might just give you what you've already done.

Looks like OP was quoted approximately $800 in fees but not by AA, this estimate was from a non-AA source. Also OP is looking to travel in April or May based on information he's posted elsewhere.

I suspect that whomever gave him the tax/fee estimate has made an error somewhere and that whatever routing he is looking at might be significantly lower than $800.

Thank you DestinationDavid, got the responses I was looking for on FT... will call AA and be sure to share their response on here once tickets are booked.

    Cheers!

Yeah. 75k AA miles from AKL to NYC is going to be QF to AA or QF to JFK (can use T7 lounge instead of T8)
Not a lot of routing/carrier options involved.

But there is no way taxes/fees will be 800+

Any other routings, such as via europe, will cost more miles.

As interested as I was to go via some exotic destination like Fiji or Tahiti, AA were fairly stern in insisting OZ is the only option :)
