Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere. I thought it might be helpful to know, for instance, which carrier has the most flights JFK-LAX in August. I understand it will vary by day and seasonally. I just want a tool to give me a rough idea of the percentage share a carrier might have on a given routing. I thought it might be a helpful first step in targeting my award redemption efforts.

Kayak.com is a good place to start and it's free. I use www.expertflyer.com but it's a subscription service. I'm sure there are other ways too.

My favorite is expertflyer, but that is for other reasons too.

You can't put in a specific month, but for what you're trying to do, I would just go simple. flightstats.com or similar allows you to type in a route and see flight status. Whoever is running the most now will likely have the most when you want to go.
Plus, you'll see all the codeshares which might give you another idea...
Again, not perfect, but very simple.

An airline with more flights generally has more passengers also than those with less. I wouldn't take number of flights to be an indicator of award availability (other than if no flights there cannot be any awards).
