When a call comes to the newsroom about guns on a plane…you pay attention.
In this case it seemed hard to believe. Aaron Haight, a licensed owner of a Glock 22 and Baby Eagle 941, had no business boarding with his firearms and he knew it. What he couldn't figure out was why everyone else seemed to think it was OK for his pistols to be in the cabin with him.
It's a story that starts early, 4:30am on June 14th, 2011. Aaron's sleepy, and needs to fill out a form in order to bring his firearms with him from Vancouver to Collingwood, Ont. for a shooting competition.

The incident happened during the short strike of check in agents. Management replacement workers were on duty and lacked the experience to deal with the incident. There was no criminal activity here....just a plain stupid mistake by inexperienced replacement staff. The mistake was caught and addressed and all ended well.

As a police officer prior to 9/11, I would occasionally carry a gun while flying commercial (after 9/11 pretty much only federal law enforcement are allowed to carry.) I would fill out and sign a form at the ticket counter attesting that I was a law enforcement officer; one copy was kept at the counter, and I was given a copy to keep with me. I would have to show the form and my police I.D. at the security checkpoint and again to the flight attendant befor boarding. The flight attendant would ask the Captain for final approval for me to bring a gun onboard, and if approved, the flight crew were required to inform me if anyone else onboard was armed. From the article it sounds like the Canadian system mirrors the U.S. system. While I can understand the ticket counter messing up the paperwork, I don't understand how he was allowed to pass past security. I also don't understand why he even tried to board the plane with his guns " Aaron Haight, a licensed owner of a Glock 22 and Baby Eagle 941, had no business boarding with his firearms and he knew it." Oh well, the Canadian ssytem worked, albeit a little late.

Yeah that's where I'm confused. One would think if you forgot you had a weapon on your person, prior to boarding you would be informed of this in a BIG way.

Especially since EVERYONE DIED!!!!!!! ;) Or not.

Ok...seriously, a mistake was made, innocent people were involved and the guy went through way more hassle afterwards than was called for.

Exactly my opinion. Aren't there supposed to be built in security redundancies so these mistake don't happen?

Just so everyone knows, Toronto is not that dangerous, that you need to carry a firearm. For pete's (and everyone else's) sake, leave your weaponry at home -- credit cards and cash are all you should bring! :)

Don't worry, we should have confirmation on the Leafs failures by the end of week 1 (have to allow for some time to weed out any fluke performances they may pull)
