Hi everyone, this summer we are putting in (well paying someone to put in) a brick-paver patio & buying a hot tub. I wonder if anyone has had any experience with home projects like this and gaining miles. Other than shopping portals and using your credit cards, are there any other places that offer miles deals like "bulk" materials stores? Or home stores?

I think there was another thread about someone double / triple dipping with Home Depot and gift cards. Someone renovating their kitchen I think?

    Search is your friend.

If Home Depot has good deals, you can easily find their gift cards at a discount. And/or buy their gift cards with a miles earning or cashback credit card and/or thru an airline shopping portal.

Yeah I think Home Depot and Sears were offering only 2 miles per dollar, so people were discussing buying Home Depot gift cards and double dipping, plus using a miles CC for the purchase to triple dip.

With a very quick search I found Home Depot gift cards at a 7% discount at plasticjungle.com. More searching will surely find better deals. Of course, if Home Depot doesn't have what you want or is too expensive, then you will need to look elsewhere.

Don't forget to stop by the post office and pick up a change of address kit to get the 10% off coupon there, too.

people sell piles of the 10% coupons (more Lowes than HD) on ebay for almost nothing. I probably buy 20 of them each year and pay a buck or two for each.

We had landscaping work done last year and used our AmEx to pay the 15K+ bill. Nice bounce in the miles account. :D

YMMV, but my local Home Depot will accept Lowes coupons, including the 10% mover coupon. Very nice since HD rarely offers % off coupons.

YMMV indeed. I have 4-5 Home Depot stores nearby but the closest Lowe's is like 20 miles away, so HD has no incentive to compete like that.

    Bastards. :)

We've found customer service at the local HD to be non-existent and feel driving twice the distance to Lowes is worth the better service.

Sounds like Lowe's has some incentive to compete!

It's been a while since I got into the home improvement thing... but it used to be so that one could buy home depot cards on the AAdvantage Mall and get X miles per $. Then go use those at the store. Is this still true? I will do the projects my wife asks about if someone lets me know lol

When buying "gift" cards from an airline mall, be sure to read the fine print. I know that you can do it with Home Depot on some sites, but not others. And each vender has different rules. So, it can be done and is legit, but not with every store or website.

thanks, so I take it it still make work with the AA mall. And yes, I recall always reading and keeping all the rules or fine print of every such deal
