London hoteliers have begun ratcheting up room prices for next year’s Olympics, in one instance to more than five times their normal rates, and laying down draconian terms and conditions on wholesale travel agents.
The moves undermine the hospitality industry’s efforts to avoid tourism “price-gouging”.
With London 2012 on Tuesday to begin selling 6.6m tickets , organisers are hoping that the cost of hotel rooms during the 17 days of competition does not deter people from abroad, or put off those from parts of the UK who need to factor in overnight accommodation.
