I mainly stay @ SPG places, and I believe I have a fairly good understanding of their various brands and what type of properties they are (Lux/Upscale/Mainstream/Select); however I really don't know about the rest of them. I was hoping other people could chime in and guide me. I would like to know if I stayed @ a Andaz (for example) would that be more like a Westin/Le Meridien or more of a W ? I know the brands don't nessarily line up completely in line, but a good overview understanding would be helpful for me.

This is what I've determined so far.
    • Luxury
      • St. Regis / Luxury Collection / W
      • Park Hyatt
      • Waldorf = Astoria
      • InterContinental
      • Ritz-Carlton / BULGARI
    • Upscale
      • Westin / Le Meridien
      • Andaz / Grand Hyatt
      • Conrad
      • JW Marriott / Autograph Hotels
    • Mainstream
      • Sheraton
      • Hyatt / Hyatt Regency
      • Hilton / Doubletree / Embassy Suites
      • Crowne Plaza / Hotel Indigo
      • Marriott / Renaissance
    • Select Service
      • 4P by Sheraton / Aloft /Element
      • Hyatt Place
      • Hilton Garden Inn / Hampton Inn
      • Holiday Inn / Holiday Inn Express
      • Courtyard / Fairfield / SpringHill
Anyone care to correct this assessment?

Here's a useful file you can use as a reference when considering different hotels and chains. They aren't perfect because there is still a difference within any property within a given category but this is how a big player (STR) in the T&L industry sees it.

For consistency, I find it useful to utilize the scale within the document which is widely adopted. (i.e. Luxury, Upper Upscale, Upscale, Upper Midscale, Midscale, Economy)

I would think those Ritz-Carlton Reserve locations would equal the 4S resorts ... didnt know that they would "top" them
